I've been the webguy for the past 10 years, but have also worked at such weird places as A&P, The Disney Store, Sam Goody Music, Kings Dominion and Epcot Center in Florida.   My passion is anything pop culture: TV, Music, Movies, Famous People and Useless Trivia about all of the above.

A Sad Day..
Friday 07-30-2010 11:29pm ET

Being a HUGE Disney fan, I've had the chance to make many trips to Disney World.  Once, I took a trip with the radio station during a press weekend, and had the honor of meeting many of the voices behind Disney's most beloved characters.  It was cool to meet Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy) and many others.  Disney has made it a strict policy to only allow 1 person to be the voice of a character.  So, if you hear Ariel at a Disney show, or on a DVD, or at Disney on Ice or in a toy, it's ALWAYS Jodi Benson.  The best story of them all was Mickey and Minnie, because, they happen to be married in real life!  Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor met doing a Disney cartoon and fell in love.  So, how cool that the 2 main characters, Minnie and Mickey are husband and wife?  That's a story I've shared with excitement ever since I met them.

That's another cool story.  When I met them, they were SUPER nice.  Russi had done other voices like Strawberry Shortcake, and even Simpson's voices.  I asked them, since I was away from my family, if they would mind saying hello to my boy on my cell phone as Mickey and Minnie... they were only too happy to oblige.  That moment brought me to tears as the REAL Mickey and Minnie spoke to my son.  It was MAGICAL!

Which makes the latest news that much more sad for me.  Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey for the past 30 years, died today at age 62.

I'm sad that he's gone, but in a way, it feels like Mickey (or at least MY Mickey) has died along with him.  Wayne was the third OFFICIAL Mickey voice in Mickey's 80 year history.  Jimmy MacDonald came before him... and before that?  Walt Disney himself.

I have no idea if Disney has been grooming a successor for Wayne, and at his young age of 62, I would doubt it - still, I can't imagine it will ever be the same.

When Jim Henson died, Kermit was silent for a while, until another current Muppet member Steve Whitmire took over.  Steve has done a great job with most of the voices that Jim left behind, such as Ernie and Waldorf, but they have never been quite the same.

It's going to be weird moving forward, but for now, I take off my hat to the man who has quietly been the man behind the mouse for most of my life.  Wayne - you will be missed.
